Catalonia: A European leader in clinical trials
International Clinical Trials Day has been on May 20 each year since 2005 to commemorate the day that James Lind began his famous trial and help to drwan attention to the importance of research in healthcare. Catalonia has become one of the regions conducting the most clinical trials globally, in the recent years.
Since 2001, the number of clinical trials carried out in Catalonia have grown consistently year after year (excluding 2020, when clinical trials were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which had a slight effect on the number of trials initiated on that year). However, the BioRegion also outperformed in Covid-19 clinical trials and ranked 6th position in Europe.
A first-class healthcare system, with top-notch hospitals and internationally renowned healthcare professionals, are the main factors explaining why Catalonia has emerged as a prime destination for clinical trials in the world. In fact, the most important international pharmaceutical companies, including Novartis, Roche, MSD, AstraZeneca, Janssen, GSK, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bayer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Gilead, Pfizer, AbbVie and Sanofi, are running their trials in Catalonia.
Catalonia is one of the world‘s top 10 sites in terms of participation in clinical trials underway, only outranked by large countries such as the United States, Canada, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy. Moreover, Catalonia excels in conducting clinical trials in a wide range of therapeutic areas, as shown in the figure below:
