The Step by Step Foundation, a rehabilitation center specializing in spinal-cord injuries that is committed to personalized treatment and support for research, is organizing the second edition of the International Spinal Cord Repair Meeting - Research Conference on 26 and 27 April 2013 in Barcelona.

This foundation was created in 2007 in l'Hospitalet de Llobregat by Frederic Crespo, an architect by trade —having participated in managing projects like the Pompeu Fabra University campus, the 2004 Barcelona Universal Forum of Cultures and the enlargement of the Fira de Barcelona— who suffered a spinal-cord injury in 2004. The Step by Step Foundation has brought an innovative physiotherapy treatment to Catalonia, called Project Walk, which is a benchmark in the United States and has been applied over the past 10 years in numerous patients suffering from this type of injury with very satisfactory results. In Catalonia, both the first stage of spinal-cord injury, focusing on medical treatment, and the second stage, with global rehabilitation, are covered with optimal treatment at the Vall d'Hebron Hospital and the Guttmann Institute. It is in the third stage, of mental, emotional and physical adaptation to the new situation, when the Step by Step Foundation steps in.

The conference will deal with breakthroughs in biomedicine and biotechnology related to recovery of spinal-cord function after injuries, including cell therapies, immunomodulation and nanomaterials.

Thus, the Step by Step Foundation is bringing together top researchers in neuroregeneration and curing spinal-cord injuries:

  • Michal Schwartz, Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel)
  • Mikael Svensoon, Karolinska Institute (Sweden)
  • Francisco Javier Rodríguez, National Hospital for Paraplegics (Toledo, Spain)
  • François Feron, University of Marseille and La Conception Hospital (France)
  • David J Fink, University of Michigan (United States)
  • Victor Arvanian, Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center (United States)
  • Fabrizio Gelain, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (United States)
  • Charles H. Tator, University of Toronto and Toronto Western Hospital (Canada)
  • Kinichi Nakashima, Nara Institute of Science and Technology (Japan)
  • Armin Curt, Balgrist University Hospital (Switzerland)

The conference is geared towards doctors, researchers and specialists in the field of spinal-cord injuries.

Call for abstracts

As part of the official conference program, on 26 April, a space will be set aside for researchers from centers and bodies around the world to present their work or research to the general audience. Anyone interested must submit an abstract before 1 March. The organizing committee will select presenters from the abstracts received.
