The winners of the first Trifermed Awards for Social Impact in Healthcare were businessman and patron of the arts Antoni Vila Casas; founder of Archivel Farma, José Martínez; DAU Foundation for integration of people with mental disorders into the workforce; and the Group Affected by Multiple Sclerosis (GAEM Foundation).
The awards, organized by Trifermed with collaboration from Biocat, CataloniaBio and EsadeCreapolis, are presided over by Montserrat Vendrell, CEO of Biocat and the Barcelona Science Park. The awards were given out on 26 June at the Trifermed Social Evening, which brought together more than 250 professionals from the international biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector at CaixaForum Barcelona.
In addition to Montserrat Vendrell, the awards panel was made up of representatives with a long career in the sector: Ignasi Biosca, CEO of Reig Jofré and president of CataloniaBio; Edgar Jordà, CEO of EsadeCreapolis; Ana Maiques, co-founder and CEO of Neuroelèctrics; Antoni Villaró, general manager of Ferrer; Carlos Gallardo, founder and general manager of CG Health Ventures; Clara Campàs, director of strategy and development at Kern Pharma; and Luis Ruiz, founder and CEO of Spherium Biomed.
A sector with great social and economic impact
Biomedicine is a sector with great economic impact. “Research in health is one of our country’s most valuable resources and an indisputable asset for our knowledge economy,” said Montserrat Vendrell, CEO of Biocat and the Barcelona Science Park and president of the Trifermed awards.
Beyond just numbers, however, the sector also has a huge impact on quality of life. “The biomedical sector is constantly making headlines: the Trifermed awards aim to turn the spotlight onto the small stories behind them to help encourage other companies, individuals or public institutions to also commit to changing the world through biomedicine and pharmaceuticals,” explains Sergi Trilla, CEO of Trifermed.
