The ASCAMM Technology Center –located in the Vallès Technology Park and one of the main members of the TECNIO network of experts in applied research and technology transfer in Catalonia–, is promoting an international seminar on new quick prototyping technology to manufacture personalized craniomaxillofacial implants that are fit to the anatomy of each patient. The seminar will be held on 28 September at Barcelona’s Hospital de Sant Pau.

The seminar, organized under the framework of the European Custom IMD project, will include expert European speakers from clinical, medical engineering and personalized manufacturing fields. The Catalan technology center is coordinating the consortium in charge of executing this project, made up of 23 partners from seven countries, and aims to develop biomaterials and employ rapid manufacturing technology. Their work began in 2007 and will last four years, with a total estimated budget of 9.8 million euros. Around 50% of the project’s funding has come from the European Commission through their 6th Framework Program.

The seminar, entitled Medical Rapid Prototyping and Additives Manufacturing in Cranimaxillofacial Surgery, is aimed at healthcare professionals (cranimaxillofacial surgeons and neurosurgeons), industrial designers and biomedical engineers. The agenda will cover new rapid manufacturing technology applied to the production of personalized implants, digital design of this type of implants, and new biocompatible materials and their applications. Moreover, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a practical demonstration of the design software normally used in personalizing medical implants.

The organizing committee includes the Maastricht University Hospital’s Department of Cranimaxillofacial Surgery (Netherlands), Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Barcelona) and the Materialise company (Belgium).
