The most important scientific congress on research towards an effective AIDS vaccine will be held in Barcelona from 7 to 10 October 2013. HIVACAT, the Catalan program working on a therapeutic vaccine for HIV since 2006 that is already in a very advanced stage, will co-organize AIDS Vaccine 2013 with the Global Vaccine Enterprise. The latest edition in Boston welcomed one thousand researchers specializing in this field.

Dr. Josep M. Gatell, co-director of HIVACAT with Dr. Bonaventura Clotet, said in an interview with Biocat on the development of an AIDS vaccine that AIDS Vaccine 2013 being held in Barcelona "is an international recognition of the critical mass of scientists we have here in this field."

The deadline for registration at the reduced price of $475 is 2 June. Additionally, the call for abstracts (15-minute oral presentations, 4-minute poster discussions or poster exhibitions) is open now through 28 April. Abstracts can deal with any aspect of basic or clinical research, epidemiology, sociology, economics or operations that may contribute to the development of either preventative or therapeutic AIDS-vaccine candidates. This includes research on acute HIV infection, immune response after being exposed to or infected with HIV, or after immunogens are administered.

The congress is also offering grants. Priority will be given to researchers selected to present their abstracts.

HIVACAT is an unprecedented public/private consortium in Spain made up of two world-renowned research centers, namely the AIDS Research Institute (IrsiCaixa) and the Hospital Clínic Barcelona Infectious Diseases and AIDS Unit. This work is carried out jointly with the Esteve pharmaceutical group and with support from the “la Caixa” Foundation and the Government of Catalonia Department of Health and Department of Economy and Knowledge.

In 2011, HIVACAT and B·Debate held an event in Barcelona with top-notch scientists, including Nobel laureate in medicine Françoise Barré Sinoussi, to debate the latest breakthroughs in retroviruses.

Date: 7 to 10 October 2013
Venue: Barcelona International Convention Center (CCIB) • Rambla Prim, 1-17 (Forum area) • Barcelona
