Cellex Foundation has launched a pioneering and experimental scholarship CiMs-Cellex program for fourth grade student at secondary schools in Catalonia who demonstrate ability and motivation for mathematics and science. In its first edition, the organization has chosen 24 students from among about 500 who will attend two years of international science high school. It will be taught in two different spaces: at Aula Escola Europe in Barcelona and at IES Jaume Vicens Vives in Girona, both authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). These studies will be parallel to the high school ones which they are studying already.
The distinctive features of the International Baccalaureate program are diverse. There are many works, both written and experimental, students learn with a more analytical approach than learning by rote, and they are encouraged by their work and experiments, critical thinking and the way scientists proceed.
The grant also includes a research stay during the summer to be chosen among different schools of international renown in Catalonia but also abroad. It is intended that working with direct contact with a real research environment enables them to develop autonomy, interest and ability to learn.
Next 28th January the second call for entries will open until next 24th February 2013.
The company headed by patron Pere Mir has allocated € 4 million to this program. He has also funded the € 9 million new Center for Biomedical Research IDIBAPS opened last 10th January in Barcelona.
