Dr. Alícia Granados named 2010 Ambassador to the BioRegion
<p>The president of the Catalan government will award her the honor at the Biocat Forum, to be held on 2 December, before 600 representatives of the biotechnology, biomedical, and medical technology sectors in Catalonia.</p>
Researcher and business woman Doctor Alícia Granados, international specialist in evaluation of healthcare systems and technologies, has been named 2010 Ambassador to the BioRegion. She will be awarded the honor by the president of the Catalan government, José Montilla, as part of the 3rd edition of the Biocat Forum, to be held on 2 December at la Casa Llotja de Mar, in Barcelona.
This year’s Biocat Forum —whose theme is Come, connect, build the future— is aimed at fostering collaboration among different players from the world of innovation. The 2009 edition drew more than 600 representatives of companies and organizations from the biotechnology, biomedical, and medical technology sectors of the BioRegion of Catalonia.
Dr. Granados presently heads her own company, MASdit, serves as vice president of the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP), is a member UAB Research Park board (PRUAB), and is both a member and current president of the UAB Social Council.
Biocat began awarding the title of Ambassador last year to recognize an individual from the scientific, financial, political or social arena who has helped spark biotechnology in Catalonia and who has supported the BioRegion of Catalonia at the national or international level.
In 2009 the title was awarded to Dr. Joan Massagué, director of the Cancer Biology & Genetics Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).
The keynote speaker: a leader from the American biotech sector
Dr. Diego Miralles, head of the West Coast Research Center and head of Healthcare Innovation at Johnson & Johnson, will be the keynote speaker at the 2010 Biocat Forum. Miralles will analyze uncertainties facing the sector on issues such as regulatory affairs, reimbursement, and venture capital and will examine how changes in healthcare systems are creating a demand for innovative new drugs. His talk, entitled Ensuring a bright future for the biotechnology industry, will provide guidelines on how to create a more efficient environment for capital that offers a greater chance of success.
The Forum will also include three roundtable discussions to analyze the future of biotechnology in areas including food and health; medical technology and strategies to drive innovation through public purchasing; and the strength of emerging markets such as India and China in biotechnology and medical technology. There will also be a presentation on business opportunities for biotech companies.
Accompanying these events will be the awards ceremony for the BioEmprenedorXXI prize, which is given to recognize the best business start-up plan for an innovative life sciences company. This program, organized by Biocat together with Barcelona Activa, “la Caixa”, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and Genoma España, aims to help participants create their companies through a series of training activities and through business strategy analysis.
