Today at 4 pm, the Barcelona Medical Association (COMB) will hold the fourth Healthcare Barcelona Investment Forum organized jointly by the Barcelona City Council –through  Barcelona Activa–, ESADE Business Angels Network, Biocat and the COMB. At the inaugural event, the first deputy mayor for the Barcelona City Council, Jordi William Carnes, and the president of the COMB, Dr. Miquel Vilardell, will be present.

The aim of this event is to facilitate access to private funding for companies working in biotechnology, medical devices, healthcare services and ICT for health, and that are in the initial stages or growing and need and injection of capital of between €200,000 and €2 million.

The eleven companies selected to participate are:

These companies will each have 10 minutes to present their projects before more than 150 investors. Other participants will include doctors, entrepreneurs, researchers from research parks, healthcare managers and executives from pharma companies. After the presentation, in order to facilitate contact and business opportunities between participating companies and the investors, there will be a networking session.

On 1 March, the Evaluation Committee, made up of members of the organizing agencies –including Director of Innovation, Dr. Marta Príncep, from Biocat– selected the best projects that are currently carrying out R&D&i activities and have the highest potential for growth  from among the total of 32 presented.

Healthcare, a strategic sector for Barcelona’s productive model

A total of 33 companies participated in the previous three editions of this Forum, allowing them to present their business project to a group of investors. Of these, six have negotiated investments of more than two million euros.

The healthcare sector has become an area of great opportunities for business angels over the past years, as the volume of investment has increased considerably, surpassing other sectors like software, energy, telecommunications and media.  This way, the healthcare sector is playing a key role in transforming the city’s productive model, moving it towards sectors with high value added. One example of this is the fact that in little more than one year, four Healthcare Investment Forums have been held in Barcelona.

With the aim of increasing access to funding, each forum has been organized with a different network of investors located in the city: the first and third editions with Keiretsu, the second with the IESE network of private investors and family offices, and, this time, with the ESADE Business Angels Network.
