The Government of Catalonia and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRi) have given oncologist Elias Campo the 2013 National Research Award in recognition of his leukemia research. The award has an endowment of €40,000.
Professor of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Barcelona (UB) and director of Research at Hospital Clínic, Campo has carried out extensive research as the head of the Human and Experimental Functional Oncomorphology group at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (Idibaps). His research on the genome and epigenome sequencing of leukemia has led scientists to ascertain the cells that provoke the disease, discover new molecular mechanisms involved in its development, and improve diagnosis.
Leukemia is a cancer characterized by abnormal multiplication of blood cells, especially leukocytes or red blood cells, which makes up 25% of all childhood cancers according to CanalSalut.
The National Research Awards have also recognized Isabelle Anguelovski, researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) as a young talent, the Josep Carreras Foundation for scientific patronage, KIC InnoEnergy Iberia for public-private partnership in R&D&i and newspaper Ara for scientific communication.
