Enrolment has begun for the third edition of the Summer School on Medicines

Professors from more than seven countries will teach a programme that covers the entire medicine development chain, in Barcelona and Toulouse.

The third edition of the Summer School on Medicines (SSM3), organised by the Barcelona Science Park, Biocat, the University of Montreal, Montreal in Vivo, the University Paul Sabatier and the Oncopôle, has opened its enrolment through the website www.ssm3.org. Until the date of 30 June, enrolment can be formalised for this year's course, which will take place in Barcelona (Spain) and Toulouse (France) between 11 and 22 July.

With an interdisciplinary and innovative programme, the SSM3 offers 90 hours of training that includes practical cases, visits and industrial sessions, in this way covering nearly the entire value chain in the development of medicines, from the initial idea to their reaching the market. The professors, coming from seven countries, will teach a programme that for the first year offers the research experience conducted in research centres, the business management and knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and the vision of the directors. Also, besides the scientific sessions, two practical cases will be carried out on the discovery and development of drugs in which the needs and the specific development challenges will be posed. The students will also participate in two industrial sessions in which the two representatives of the industry will analyse the challenges that two subjects or applications presently of current concern in the biopharmaceutical industry.

The School, with a programme aimed at results for the discovery and development of medicines, is directed towards graduates in the areas of health sciences, students of master's, doctoral and post-doctoral degrees, members of the biopharmaceutical industry and of the regulatory agencies, researchers, scientific reporters and other professionals related to the subject.

In this third edition, the School has expanded its international dimension with the inclusion of the entities from Quebec, as a result of the collaboration agreement between Biopolis —organisation that groups the Quebec bioclusters, such as Montreal in Vivo— and Biocat.

Among the members of the scientific committee of this year is Dr. Jordi Quintana, of the Barcelona Science Park; Dr. Marta Príncep, from Biocat; Dr. Christophe Cazaux, from the University of Toulouse III, Oncopôle; Dr. Roland Bugat, from the Claudius Regaud Institute, and the Drs. Denis de Blois and Brian White-Guay, from the University of Montreal, that are incorporated this year in the organisation of the third Summer School on Medicines and which will be the host city in 2012.
