European Biomaterials Congress and first fair on design and manufacturing of medical devices to take place in Barcelona
Biocat is on the Scientific Committee for the event, which will be held at Hotel Barceló Sants on 5 and 6 October 2011.

The European Biomaterials Congress will be held for the first time in Spain —in Barcelona— on 5 and 6 October 2011, and will be co-located with the first fair on the design and manufacturing of medical devices (Medevice Exhibition).
Companies will display their products and services, and 25 international experts will share the latest innovations in biomaterials for medical devices (cardiovascular, orthopedic, ophthalmologic, tissue-engineering, drug-delivery, antimicrobial coatings, etc.) and in advanced manufacturing techniques.
"The event is designed to help Spanish medical-device manufacturers network with colleagues from around Europe and make contacts to develop their business", explains Àngel Lagraña of Ascamm Technology Centre, one of the organizers of the event in collaboration with UBM Canon, Biocat and the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC). According to Lagraña, for companies from the sector that want to boost their internationalization process, this event is “a door to foreign markets without having to leave the country. It is a profitable platform in which to demonstrate the company’s potential to European manufacturers and thus increase possibilities for outsourcing.” UBM Canon also organizes other specialized international fairs and congresses like MD&M West (California, USA) and Medtec (Europe).
Biocat will have a stand (booth 308), which it will make available to companies and organizations from the BioRegion to leave informational and promotional materials. Those interested should send an email to events@biocat.cat.
Conference program
Biocat CEO Dr. Montserrat Vendrell will moderate the session The Medical Device Industry in Spain as part of the conference program. In this session, Fenin International Affairs Coordinator César Rubio will explain the current state of the medical device industry in Spain and Biocat Project Director for the Department of Innovation Nerea Alonso will discuss the changes, opportunities and synergies found in the cluster in Catalonia. Furthermore, Biocat Director of Innovation Dr. Marta Príncep will moderate the session Medical Device Market opportunities and regulatory update. Both sessions will be held on 5 October.
Both the fair and the congress represent a highly dynamic sector in which the fields of biotechnology, biomaterials and medical devices interact to generate innovations. The field of biomaterials has grown over its fifty years of existence and has increasingly relevant applications to micro and sensorial technology, electrical engineering and medical engineering. In fact, biomaterials are key components in a growing number of medical devices, thanks to their specific functions and interaction with biologic systems. The most common instruments are catheters, tubes for heart valves, breast implants, dental implants, pacemakers and kidney dialysis machines. The sector generates $100 billions internationally, according to the organizers of Medevice.
The event is geared towards professionals that make decisions regarding product development, R&D, quality control, production engineering and manufacturing, electronic design and manufacturing, and purchasing.
Companies and organizations from the BioRegion of Catalonia are eligible for a 15% discount on registration through mid-September: 1 day (€170, taxes not included) and two days (€298, taxes not included).
