Swiss company Nanonica, with a subsidiary in Barcelona, has announced the first edition of their international award —the Nanonica Prize 2013— that will recognize the most significant research in nanotechnology and the most innovative project in the field of industrial, medical or pharmaceutical applications each year.

Nowadays nanotechnology is one of the fields with the most potential to impact industrial manufacturing, solve environmental problems and provide new applications in the healthcare arena (through nanomedicine).

First category: breakthrough of the year

An international panel of judges chaired by Catalan researcher Víctor Puntes, ICREA professor, head of the Inorganic Nanoparticles group at the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology (ICN) and editor of NanoWiki, will select the most significant research in nanotechnology carried out this year around the world. The winner, who will receive €10,000, will be chosen from a shortlist of one hundred proposals provided by Nanonica selected from the most prestigious scientific publications.

Second category: best applied proposal

Nanonica Prize 2013 will also give €5,000 to the most innovative project in the field of industrial, medical or pharmaceutical applications from either the public or private sector. The selection criteria for this category are degree of innovation and originality, commercialization and technical feasibility, and socioeconomic impact.
