Nanonica prepares second edition of nanotechnology award
Nanonica Prize 2014 aims to recognize the breakthrough of the year in nanotechnology research
Swiss company Nanonica is holding the second edition of their Nanonica Prize. These awards recognize the breakthrough of the year in the field of nanotechnology. The winner, which will be announced on 15 September 2014, will receive €10,000.
The selection committee for these awards will be chaired by Víctor Puntes, ICREA research professor and head of the Inorganic Nanoparticles Group at the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology (ICN2). Other members of the committee include Jochen Feldmann, professor at the University of Munich; Andrey Rogach, professor at the University of Hong Kong; and Liberato Manna, of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Genoa.
Nanonica S.A., created in 2006, is based in Lugano and has a subsidiary in Barcelona called Nanonica S.L. It is devoted to knowledge transfer from academia to industry, focusing on nanotechnology and microtechnology. The company aims, on one hand, to identify the best projects to address industry needs and enable companies to detect these initiatives in universities and research centers; and, on the other, to develop and market the results of groundbreaking research in nanotechnology.
Jochen Feldmann, who is on the selection committee this year, won the award last year for his development of a “nano-ear” that can detect sounds on microscopic scale. As he explains in the paper Optically Trapped Gold Nanoparticle Enables Listening at the Microscale, this “nano-ear” could be used to study microorganisms like bacteria or viruses, or to analyze the movement and vibrations of micromechanical machines.
