The Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) now has a new 625-square-meter space for its Clinical Research Support Unit (USIC), which will see between 750 and 1,000 patients each year and conduct some 350 phase II, III and IV trials. The new facilities, located on the 13th floor of the Mother and Child building at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, will provide support for clinical research with seven consulting rooms, a nursing unit and a sample-processing laboratory. It will also house the headquarters of the Academic Research Organization (ARO), which will take care of management, quality control, statistics and regulatory issues.
While the average number of clinical trials in Europe has fallen between 25% and 30%, the VHIR has seen a slight increase, with nearly 600 clinical trials currently underway. The new space will help the VHIR maintain its current level of excellence among the leading centers in the world, a position that has allowed the hospital and its research institute to sign important agreements with pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer, Sanofi, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Quintiles.
The Carlos III Health Institute, with ERDF funds, has contributed €930,000; the Ministry of Health, €218,500 euros; and the Consortium to Support Network Biomedical Research (Caiber), €85,000.
