The Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) Knowledge Transfer and Innovation Unit has announced the winners of the first edition of its Innovation Contest. In the general category, first prize went to the project submitted by Rafa Simó entitled “Development of eye drops to treat diabetic retinopathy: from experimental research to clinical application”. In the nursing category, the winner was “Continuous automatic bladder irrigation system”, by Montserrat Llinàs. Both projects will receive €5,000 euros.

The runner-up in the general category was “Aprataxina as a new biomarker of response to irinotecan in patients with colorectal cancer”, by Diego Arango. The runner-up in nursing was “Therapeutic visual reinforcement for physiotherapy”, by Isabel Martín. Both of these projects will receive €2,500. Plus, special mention was awarded in recognition of the quality technical report submitted for the project “Biopsy punch with storage integrated”, led by Mireia Ruiz.

The contest, funded by Roche and open to all personnel at the research center and hospital (HUVR), was promoted last year in order to encourage innovation in research projects, in solutions from within the hospital setting and in industrial studies to register patents. Carlos Lurigados, Biocat head of Entrepreneurship and Business Growth, was on the technical committee that evaluated the nearly 50 proposals submitted, along with representatives from the VHIR and the nursing management area, Ysios, the Barcelona Medical Association (COMB), RCD, Trifermed, Arvor and Metasbio.
