Biocat offers four grants for Catalan students to Summer School on Medicines

Catalan students interested in attending the 8th Summer School on Medicines (SSM8), which will be held this year in Toulouse from 3 to 8 July, can apply for one of the four Biocat grants, which cover tuition, accommodations, breakfasts and lunches (meaning the full-fee registration, which costs a total of €650 per person).
To be eligible for these grants, applicants must be post-doc, masters or PhD students, researchers or professionals working in the biomedical industry (or at an organization associated with this field) or in the regulatory arena. Those working at a company or organization in the BioRegion of Catalonia or who belong to a research group or pharmaceutical company doing drug discovery are also eligible.
The deadline to submit applications is 23 June at 12:00 noon and those selected will be notified by Monday 27 June. Biocat also offers other financial advantages for Catalan students going to Toulouse. For the minimum-fee registration, which costs €300 per person and does not include accommodations, participants coming from Catalonia can request a 50% discount.

An innovative, comprehensive program focusing on drug discovery
The 2016 edition of SSM (Summer School on Medicines) features a unique, comprehensive program of 40 training hours focusing on drug discovery and development. The school covers the entire production chain, from the initial stages in the laboratory research through launching the drug to market. This year's summer school will be hosted at the Cancer University Institute of Toulouse Oncopole (France), which features leading healthcare professionals, researchers, academics and entrepreneurs in the fight against cancer.
This program's value added is that it covers both the theory and practice of the topic. The summer school will start on Monday 4 July with two theory sessions on the drug discovery phase, emphasizing the role of chemical biology and new types of biological drugs made from cell and gene therapy.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, participants will work on drug discovery in the preclinical phase and will also do a practical case study, in which students will play an active, dynamic role in the workshop, interacting with companies from the sector. Students will have additional opportunities to do this in the other sessions studying real cases with the real protagonists present, scheduled throughout the week.
The theory modules will be complemented over the following days with sessions focusing on clinical development, transferring research to industry and issues of pharmaceutical economics and intellectual property. Drug products concepts will also be discussed, focusing on patents, manufacturing and marketing.
Highlights will include a visit to Sanofi Biopark on Thursday 7 July and a symposium led by representatives from Sanofi and Evotec, who will speak about the industrial market.
The Summer School on Medicines is an initiative of Biocat, Barcelona Science Park, University of Montreal and University Paul Sabatier Toulouse III. This year the University of Barcelona, University Drug Research Group (GRUM), Quebec Government – Department of International Relations and La Francophonie, CAPTOR Project – Investissement d’Avenir and Toulouse Cancer Healthcare Foundation – Toulouse Cancer Santé are also participating.
