The second batch of d·HEALTH Barcelona Part Time entrepreneurs have hit the streets. The Biocat talent development program adapted from d·HEALTH Barcelona completed its second edition with Graduation Day, an in person event where the fellows pitched the projects they developed over the previous eight months to address unmet clinical needs. Tio Jordi™
The group from the Intensive Medicine Unit at Bellvitge University Hospital designed a project to improve quality of life for people with difficulty swallowing by providing clinically safe, nutritious, varied meals. This system helps combat the negative effects of dysphagia, including malnutrition and bronchoaspiration.
MEDIC-hf
The team from the Cardiology Unit at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau developed a simple, affordable method for adjusting medicine doses for patients with heart failure, preventing frequent hospital visits. The concept combines daily text messages sent to patients with heart failure and a dashboard for professionals that has automated support for clinical decision-making and helps more efficiently adjust dosage.
Safe & Sound
The people working with the Hospital at Home Unit at Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital in Badalona designed a transversal solution to promote emotional wellbeing for patients with long rehabilitation processes who develop anxiety and/or depression due to their disease and other factors. The proposal aims to accelerate both physical and mental rehabilitation by improving patients’ quality of life, as well as reducing the time healthcare professionals spend on psychological support.
Calma Cura
The team from the Geriatric Unit at Hospital Universitari Parc Taulí developed innovative pain relief dressings designed to make patients with bedsores more comfortable while their wounds heal. Their proposal combines traditional compresses and a system of external tubes that can be used to administer analgesic drugs directly onto the wound. This solution aims to make changing the dressings much less painful and more tolerable for patients.
Playpal
The team from the Rehabilitation Unit at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu came up with an innovative remote rehabilitation platform for pediatrics using gamification. It is designed to help improve adherence to treatment and encourage families and clinics to participate actively. Hospital Sant Joan de Déu also plays a key role in implementation, ensuring an effective, affordable approach to remote rehabilitation.
Absula
The people who worked in Digestive Endoscopy at Dr. Josep Trueta University Hospital in Girona designed a bioabsorbable cannula for local treatment of post-ERCP pancreatitis that is more anatomical, flexible and porous, and has anti-migration properties.
The event drew to a close after the participants were presented with diplomas recognizing their achievement, completing a full innovation cycle from identifying the business idea to designing and prototyping a viable solution and searching for funding. Plus, the participants acquired knowledge in medicine and business development, as well as design thinking and creative leadership skills.
Some of the main changes in this second edition included the length of the program, addition of new benchmark hospitals in Catalonia and collaboration from Eurecat. The program received support from the Catalan Ministry of Health, EIT Health and Tech Barcelona.
