Cancer, diabetes, stroke and spinal cord injuries are some of the conditions studied at the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) in Barcelona. Thanks to the new initiative "Faig recerca" (I research), patients, family members and the general public can contribute by making small donations to the center, one research group, or a specific doctor, which will be organized through the website www.yoinvestigo.org (in Spanish).

Donations will go to better understanding what causes these diseases, improving treatment, and finding new ways to diagnose and prevent them.

There is a wide range of participation opportunities:

At an event with journalists, Dr. Joan Comella, director of the VHIR, highlighted the increase in research projects in 2012, both in terms of impact and of knowledge transfer. They will soon develop the agreements signed with pharmaceutical companies Sanofi, Pfizer and Roche, as well as negotiating with other leading global industries in clinical trials.

Dr. Comella also called for political decision-makers to maintain the public calls for proposals focusing on science in order to preserve and increase the international credibility of Catalan research.

The VHIR is a world-renowned biomedical research center, with more than 1,200 people from around the globe and 60 research groups. In our 2011 Year-end Report you can find more in-depth information on the work they carry out.
