The Japanese pharmaceutical market is the second largest in the world and leads imports in the sector. Of all of its companies, five are among the 30 largest drug manufacturers in the world.

Historically, this industry has been highly focused on the internal market to meet strong local demand, but is now going global and looking for alliances with foreign biotechnology companies or institutions to develop new drugs and incorporate new technology.

In this context, ACCIÓ and Biocat (through bioXclusters+) are organizing a mission for Catalan companies interested in joining a delegation to Japan from 8 to 15 October, coinciding with BioJapan 2016.

The mission, which can accept a maximum of 8 Catalan companies, is geared towards biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical technology and digital health companies, which will attend two important events held in Osaka and Yokohama over this period of time.

Program of activities

From 10 to 11 October, the companies will attend specific conferences on the industry in Japan to discuss business opportunities and regulatory issues. On 11 October, they will join the European Biotech & Pharma Partnering Conference in Osaka, organized by bioXclusters+, the Osaka biotech cluster and EU-Japan Centre, where they will have business-to-business meetings (B2B) scheduled ahead of time with Japanese companies in the Kansai region.

After this event, the companies will go to Yokohama to attend the 18th edition of BioJapan, the benchmark fair for the sector in Asia, from 12 to 14 October. There will be a group stand available to all participating companies, B2B meetings and exhibiting companies can give a brief presentation for other participants at the fair.

The cost of the mission for each company is €3,500 approximately, and there is a €1,454.44 travel grant available. Anyone interested should fill out the ACCIÓ preliminary form before 11 July.

This mission is part of the delegation to Japan organized by bioXclusters+ for SMEs based in one of the regions of the project. Bioxclusters+ brings together four leading clusters in biotechnology and healthcare: Biocat (Barcelona, Catalonia), BioM (Bavaria, Germany), BioPmed/Bioindustry Park Silvano Fumero (Piedmont, Italy) and LyonBiopole (Rhône-Alpes, France) to encourage the internationalization of SMEs in the field of personalized medicine.
