The BioRegion of Catalonia has become one of the top life sciences and healthcare ecosystems in Europe over the past ten years. Since 2009, Biocat has been raising awareness of the healthcare innovation indicators that show this growth in the BioRegion of Catalonia Report, the benchmark publication for the sector, now in its tenth edition.

The event will be held at Auditori L'Illa in Barcelona on Monday, February 17, 2025 with a delegation of top representatives from the Government of Catalonia, led by President of the Government of Catalonia Salvador Illa i Roca, with Catalan Minister of Research and Universities Núria Montserrat and Catalan Minister of Health Olga Pané.

The event, which will last all day for the first time, will include sessions and panel discussions, as well as a variety of networking spaces for the more than 800 professionals the event is expected to draw, including industry executives and representatives from research bodies, hospitals, sector stakeholders and the entrepreneurial community, as well as investors and experts in healthcare innovation.

The 2025 program, like every year, will feature a presentation of the main indicators and conclusions from the Report’s analyses, by Biocat CEO Robert Fabregat. This information will then be interpreted by representatives from the three sector business organizations: Catalonia.Health, Farmaindustria and Fenin, in a debate moderated by ACCIÓ.

The event will also feature keynote speakers, including Director of Innovation at Hospital Clinic Barcelona Jorge Juan Fernández, who will look at the most important global news in the sector. The panel discussions will focus on three key topics:

  1. Whether Europe is becoming less competitive compared to the United States and Asia in key areas like artificial intelligence, regulatory issues and health data, with representatives from EFPIA, Elem Biotech and Alira Health;
  2. The difficulties and hurdles in getting innovations and advanced therapies developed by the biopharmaceutical industry to market and patients, with multinational corporations like AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Menarini, Oryzon and Roche Pharma; and
  3. The challenge of environmental sustainability in the healthcare sector, from the perspective of various stakeholders in the ecosystem that are active in this area, including Mollet University Hospital, Aliath Bioventures and Integra Therapeutics, plus a European benchmark with extensive experience with this type of initiative, the Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare.

The day will finish off with a live episode of the podcast BioEmprendedores, featuring Mario Rovirosa, CEO of the Ferrer pharmaceutical group.

This edition of the report has been made possible thanks to support from Alira Health, AstraZeneca, Johnson&Johnson, Grupo Menarini, Roche, AMGEN, Almirall, Esteve, Pfizer and Sanofi, and collaboration from ACCIÓ, Catalonia Health, Farmaindustria i Fenin
