2022 BioRegion of Catalonia Report
In February, Biocat presented the 2022 BioRegion of Catalonia Report, with collaboration from ACCIÓ, the associations CataloniaBio & HealthTech, Farmaindustria and Fenin, and the companies Amgen, Esteve, Almirall and Alira Health.
Record investment in the BioRegion
The 2022 BioRegion Report, promoted by Biocat since 2009 and presented on February 13 to more than 600 people in Barcelona, shows a sector with steady growth that has beat all-time records in funding for startups and scaleups, mergers and acquisitions, investors and international capital investment, as well as excellent indicators for clinical trials and scientific publications.
In 2022, startups and scaleups in the BioRegion secured €445 million in investment, the most to date, mainly from venture capital, which invested €343 million in 35 operations, 77% of the total. Investment was fueled by the first megaround in the history of the BioRegion, with dental medtech firm Impress securing €122 million.
A year in which the sector continued generating wealth for the country, putting Catalonia first in exports of life sciences and healthcare products in Spain, with a business fabric of over 1,350 companies, employing 247,000 people (7% of the working population of Catalonia). In addition to a growing segment of startups and scaleups that beat all-time funding records. These indicators consolidated the BioRegion as one of the most dynamic healthcare innovation hubs in Europe and the best in Spain, constantly welcoming new international innovation centers and multinational corporations.
